I interviewed sailor Alex Thomson ahead of his fifth attempt to win the Vendée Globe, the solo, non-stop and unassisted round-the-world yacht race known as “the Everest of the seas”. Last time, he narrowly finished second after being alone at sea for nearly 75 days (during which he never slept for longer than an hour at once). It’s isolation as a competitive sport.
